Speedway – Edinburgh Monarchs v Glasgow Tigers

Did something new tonight, went to the speedway for the first time and really enjoyed it.

It was the first meet of the season and a local derby, the Edinburgh Monarchs v the Glasgow Tigers.

The atmosphere was fantastic and there was a surprisingly big crowd at the Almondvale Arena, probably somewhere in the region of 1000 people.

The bikes sound great and the sweet smell of methanol attacks your nostrils. The speeds that the more experienced guys are going is quite scary and the fact they don’t have brakes only adds to the thrill of watching.

We stood and watched for a while then I saw the Edinburgh Monarchs promoter and asked if I could gop inside the track to drop a few frames and he was more than happy for me to do so.

Will we be going back? Definetly, I’d imagine that speedway at this level is probably similar to what Grand Prix bike racing would have been like 20 years ago. It’s not too organised, there aren’t loads of wee people in dayglow jackets telling you what you can and can’t do and the people who are there are there because they enjoy it, not because they think they can make a quick buck. So yeah, speedway rocks and if you get the chance go and watch it, I quarantee you’ll enjoy it.
